Birmingham Universities Society of Change Ringers
Birmingham Universities Society of Change Ringers (BUSCR) is currently a thriving society. We welcome students from all universities in Birmingham and strongly encourage beginners to come and give it a go! Our regular practice is from 19:00-21:00 on a Friday at St Bartholomew’s, Edgbaston, followed by a customary trip to the pub. We have an annual dinner and termly socials, alongside a handful of tower outings throughout the year.
Whether you’ve been ringing for years or only just worked out why it’s called “learning the ropes,” at BUSCR we pride ourselves on welcoming and supporting students of all abilities. No two practices are ever quite the same, with individual handling, call changes, methods and handbells all common occurrences. If you’re interested in coming along, please send us an email (buscr.committee@gmail.com) or message us on Instagram (@birmingham_uni_bells) and let us know!
BUSCR is just a small organ in the behemoth that is the ringing scene in Birmingham, which has maintained the very highest standards of method ringing and striking over the last century. Every level of ringing is accessible to students, from the Birmingham School of Bell Ringing to the Monday night 12-bell peals at St. Philip’s Cathedral, and practice nights on the ring of 16 at St. Martin’s in the Bullring. Some students also attend the St. Paul’s Birmingham practice on a Thursday night for a slightly more intense experience! Crucially, all ringing is within walking distance of the University of Birmingham.
St Bartholomew’s Church, Edgbaston, is located on Church Road (B4217), just 2 minutes from the UoB Vale Village student accommodation. The No.1 bus stops just outside the church, while the 44, X21 and X22 buses stop just 2 minutes away. The nearest train stations are located at Five Ways (20 mins) and University (25 mins).
