University of Bristol Society of Change Ringers

Coming to Bristol as a new fresher? Are you a bell ringer already? Have you never rung a bell? Do you like meeting new people and going out on a work night?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions then come and join the University of Bristol Society Change Ringers! We welcome students from the University of Bristol and all other universities in Bristol and Bath.

We ring weekly during term-time at St. Matthew’s Kingsdown (8 bells, 22cwt) on Tuesdays 19:30-21:00, then we go for a friendly drink at a near-by pub. We cater for all abilities at practices – we ring anything from rounds to surprise major, as well as giving handling lessons to those who are just beginning to ring. We ring lots of quarter-peals as well as peals. These are to help members progress with their ringing, or just for general enjoyment. And they can also be another excuse to go to the pub! We also ring for plenty of weddings held at The Mount Without (6 bells, 12-2-0).

UBSCR members are welcome to go to the ‘city practices’. St. Paul’s Southville (6 bells, 7–2–0) on a Wednesday night is very welcoming to students. There is also a Sunday Circuit around towers in the city centre. Some students frequently attend St. Stephen’s (12 bells, 19-1-17) on a Monday night and St. Mary Redcliffe (12 bells, 50-2-21) on a Thursday night. Both practices cater for all abilities on 12 bells. If you’re really keen it is possible to ring every day!

However, we’re not just a ringing society. We spend at least as much time socialising as we do ringing. The society has many socials (Cheese and Port night, Pudding Party, Summer BBQ to name a few). We also have a Christmas Dinner, and a Formal Dinner in January to which all past and present members are invited. We also go on several ringing tours each year, for instance Cupid’s Tour in February and the Southern Universities Association weekend in November.
